Some hotels are remembered for their suites, others for their service. The Overlook Hotel is remembered for everything that happened behind its doors. With The Shining, 1980, his visionary reimagining of Stephen King’s novel, Stanley Kubrick redrew the boundaries of the horror genre, leading viewers deep into the labyrinth of the human mind.
Now, Montegrappa returns to the Overlook with Stanley Kubrick: The Shining Limited Edition, the premier release in a trilogy of writing instruments dedicated to one of contemporary cinema’s greatest auteurs.
Strictly limited and individually numbered, the collection comprises 237 fountain pens featuring 18K gold nibs and 237 rollerballs. Handcrafted in Italy, each instrument blends sterling silver, mahogany wood, and rich red acrylic resin, finished with vermeil details. Every millimetre of the design pays homage to the film’s iconic narrative motifs. On the cap band, the official The Shining logo is laser-engraved within the hotel’s haunting maze. Beneath the ambigram, a rotating vermeil disc evokes the door’s peephole cover; turn it, and the Grady twins appear and disappear within a sterling silver optical assembly, framed by their chilling invitation, “Come play with us.”
A masterclass in micro-engineering, the clip is shaped like a hotel room key, micro-cast in vermeil and tagged with Room 237 in vibrant red acrylic resin. On the fountain pen, the 18K gold nib bears an engraving of Jack’s shadow, while the barrel opens to reveal red ink flowing into the pen’s technological core: the proprietary Free Drop Reservoir. Each fountain pen is accompanied by a 50ml bottle of custom red ink, while the rollerball includes a standard refill. Both arrive in elite presentation packaging meticulously modelled after the film’s most famous door.
For a limited time, and while supplies last, every pen in the collection comes accompanied by an exclusive, collectible postcard personally signed by Lisa and Louise Burns, cinema’s iconic twins.
