Historic San Clemente Palace to Become Mandarin Oriental Venice

The Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group has announced its latest jewel in Italy’s hospitality crown, the takeover and reimagining of the iconic San Clemente Palace Venice managed by Mandarin Oriental Hotel. This historic property, nestled on its own private island in the heart of the Venetian Lagoon, will soon be transformed into Mandarin Oriental, Venice, marking a refined evolution of one of the city’s most storied retreats.

Set within five hectares of landscaped gardens and just an eight-minute boat ride from St. Mark’s Square, this 900-year-old sanctuary blends peaceful seclusion with seamless access to the cultural heart of Venice. Originally a monastery, the site dates back to the 12th century and is steeped in centuries of heritage. In true Mandarin Oriental style, this transformation will sensitively honour its past while shaping a new era of timeless luxury.

Acclaimed London-based design studio Albion Nord will lead the aesthetic renaissance of the hotel’s 136 rooms and suites. Their vision is a fusion of Venetian charm and Mandarin Oriental’s signature understated elegance, creating a space where history and modern refinement coexist beautifully. A restored historic church, lush cloistered gardens, and the surrounding lagoon will provide an immersive sense of place that is both poetic and powerful.

A wooden boat named 'San Clemente Palace' navigates the Venetian Lagoon, with historic buildings visible in the background against a soft sunset sky.

Upon reopening in April 2026, following a seasonal closure in late 2025 and a comprehensive three-phase renovation, the hotel will reflect Mandarin Oriental’s signature philosophy: heritage, elegance, and a bespoke guest experience. From a curated spa complete with a Finnish sauna and multi-sensory showers to a quartet of distinctive dining venues, every detail is being crafted to deliver meaningful, unforgettable moments.

This addition is more than a new address, it’s a bold statement of Mandarin Oriental’s commitment to Italy. With existing properties in Milan and Lake Como, and forthcoming destinations in Rome, Cortina, and Porto Cervo, Venice now joins a prestigious portfolio that anchors the brand across Europe’s most iconic cultural hubs.

As Laurent Kleitman, Group Chief Executive of Mandarin Oriental, shared:
“This historic property, with its unique location and rich heritage, aligns perfectly with our vision to craft immersive experiences that allow guests to connect meaningfully with the destination.”
